Nintendo released Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025 as the successor to Nintendo Switch. The system keeps the hybrid handheld-and-television design while adding a larger 7.9-inch 1080p LCD screen, redesigned magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, stronger processing hardware and support for games made specifically for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo also introduced GameChat as a system-level way to communicate during play.

Release context

Nintendo revealed the hardware in January 2025, presented its launch details in an April Nintendo Direct and released it worldwide on June 5. Mario Kart World was the principal launch showcase and was sold both separately and in an official hardware bundle.

Regional differences

The console launched across North America, Europe, Japan and other markets with region-specific packaging, regulatory marks, power accessories and languages. Japan also received a domestic-language system option and a multilingual version sold through My Nintendo Store.

Physical packaging

Collectors should distinguish the standard console package from the Mario Kart World bundle and later regional bundles. A complete launch package includes the console, two Joy-Con 2 controllers, straps, grip, dock, Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, AC adapter and USB-C charging cable; bundle software may be supplied as a download rather than a game card.
