Nintendo's 16-bit successor launched as the Super Famicom in Japan in 1990, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in 1991 and the Super NES in Europe in 1992. Its controller added shoulder buttons and its cartridge hardware supported enhancement chips such as Super FX, extending the system's technical life.

Release context

The launch followed the Famicom and NES generation and placed Nintendo against Sega's Mega Drive and Genesis. Nintendo's own history records the 1991 U.S. release and 1992 European launch.

Regional differences

Japan and PAL territories share a rounded console design with four-color face buttons. North America received a more angular grey-and-purple shell and differently shaped cartridges. PAL and NTSC software also differs in timing, video output and region compatibility.

Physical packaging

Japanese boxes are generally compact and vertical, while North American and European releases use larger formats with different rating marks and seals. Player's Choice, Classic and pack-in copies should be cataloged by their exact outer packaging.

Editions and revisions

Important configurations include the original Super Famicom and regional SNES shells, later compact revisions such as the New-Style Super NES and Super Famicom Jr., and numerous game bundles.
